Usage Notes

高兴 vs 开心 — two kinds of happy

高兴 (gāoxìng) often refers to pleasure at a specific event or outcome — 'I'm pleased about this.' 开心 (kāixīn) is warmer and more emotional, suggesting general good spirits or joy. Both are correct, but 开心 feels more personal and heartfelt.

太…了 — the all-purpose intensifier

The pattern 太 + adjective + 了 is one of the most common ways to intensify in Mandarin. 太棒了 (amazing!), 太高兴了 (so happy!), 太好了 (great!). It's enthusiastic but not over-the-top — use it freely in everyday speech.

恭喜 — congratulations in Chinese culture

恭喜恭喜 is the classic congratulatory phrase, often said twice for emphasis. It is used for all kinds of positive milestones — exam results, promotions, weddings, babies, and the Lunar New Year. In Taiwan and Hong Kong it is equally common.
