New HSK 3.0: The Complete Guide
China’s updated Chinese proficiency test, explained. 9 levels, new vocabulary, new format — here’s what changed and how to prepare.
Take the HSK Level Test →What is New HSK 3.0?
New HSK 3.0 — officially the International Chinese Language Education Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards — was released by Hanban (now the Center for Chinese Language Education and Cooperation, CCLEC) in 2021 and implemented from 2022. It replaces the old 6-level HSK framework that had been in use since 1990, with a major revision in 2010.
The most significant change is the expansion from 6 levels to 9 levels, grouped into three bands: Foundational (HSK 1–3), Developmental (HSK 4–6), and Proficiency (HSK 7–9). The vocabulary requirement has also grown substantially — the old HSK 6 required roughly 5,000 words, while the new HSK 9 requires mastery of 11,092 words and 3,000 characters.
The new system also introduces a separate spoken-language track: YTCSL (Youth and Young Adult Chinese as a Second Language) and YTWO tests target different learner populations, running parallel to the main written HSK. For most learners and institutions, the core HSK 1–9 track is what matters.
Old HSK certificates (issued before 2022) remain valid at many institutions, but acceptance is narrowing as New HSK 3.0 becomes the standard. If you hold an old certificate and are applying for university admission or a scholarship, verify which standard your target institution accepts before deciding whether to retake the test.

Old HSK → New HSK 3.0 Mapping
These are approximate equivalences. The new system has higher vocabulary requirements at every level — so old HSK 4 learners are typically aiming for new HSK 5 or 6, not a direct one-to-one match.

Who Should Retake the Test?
If you hold an old HSK certificate and are planning to use it for university admission, a scholarship application, or a professional visa, check directly with your target institution before deciding. Many universities — especially in China and Taiwan — began accepting only New HSK 3.0 scores from 2023 onwards, while others still honour the old 6-level system.
If your old certificate is accepted, there is no urgent reason to retake. However, if you have continued studying, retaking under the new system often results in a higher level designation — since the old HSK 6 roughly maps to HSK 7–9 in the new system, giving advanced learners a clearer credential to present. For learners at old HSK 3 or below, the new system offers more granular levels to better reflect your actual progress.
