Grammar Focus
Aspect marker 了 (le) — completed action
了 after a verb signals a completed action: 我吃了 (I've eaten). It does NOT indicate past tense — Chinese verbs don't conjugate. Context (or time words) establishes when.
Modal verbs: 可以, 应该, 能 (néng)
可以 = permission or possibility. 应该 = moral/logical obligation. 能 = physical ability. They precede the main verb and are negated with 不: 不可以, 不应该, 不能.
Conjunction pairs: 因为…所以 and 虽然…但是
因为…所以 (because…therefore) and 虽然…但是 (although…but) are paired conjunctions — unlike English, both halves usually appear even when one would suffice.
Comparison with 比 (bǐ)
Subject + 比 + Object + Adjective: 今天比昨天冷 (Today is colder than yesterday). For negation, use 没有: 今天没有昨天冷.
