Grammar Focus

Four-character chengyu (成语)

HSK 6 requires active use of chengyu — classical allusions compressed into 4 characters. Examples: 一石二鸟 (kill two birds with one stone), 半途而废 (give up halfway). Learn origin stories for retention.

Pivotal sentences with 使/让/令

These causative verbs connect a subject to an effect on a third party: 这个消息使他非常高兴. At this level they appear in complex multi-clause sentences in reading and writing.

Advanced 把 and 被 constructions

The passive marker 被 and disposal 把 appear in complex literary contexts. 他被批评得哑口无言. Mastering these in literary registers is essential for the HSK 6 writing section.

Rhetorical questions and implied negation

Chinese writers frequently use 难道…吗 (surely not…?), 何必 (why bother), and 岂能 (how can it be) to express strong views. Recognising and producing these marks an advanced writer.

Study Tips for HSK 6

1

Read Chinese media daily at this level — People's Daily opinion pieces, Zhihu essays, or WeChat public accounts on topics you care about. The vocabulary density will stretch you in ways textbooks cannot.

2

Practise writing 200-300 character argumentative essays under timed conditions. The HSK 6 writing section asks you to summarise a passage and then argue a position — this is a practised skill, not a natural one.

3

Deepen your chengyu bank weekly. Add 5 new chengyu with their story, structure, and 2 natural example sentences. Flash card apps that include example sentences (not just definitions) are significantly more effective.
