Expressing Wishes and Hopes in Mandarin Chinese

希望 (xīwàng) is the core word for hope and wishes in Mandarin. The 祝 (zhù) formula — 祝你…… — is how you wish something for another person. Mastering wishes and blessings opens up a rich register of Chinese social life, from toasting at meals to New Year greetings and heartfelt farewells.

Usage Notes

希望 vs 祝 — hoping vs wishing

希望 (xīwàng) expresses your own hope or desire: 我希望天气好 (I hope the weather is good). 祝 (zhù) is used to formally wish something upon someone else: 祝你成功 (I wish you success). You cannot say 祝我 — that would be wishing something upon yourself.

要是…就好了 — the unreal wish

This pattern expresses a wish that is not currently reality (counterfactual). 要是现在不下雨就好了 (If only it weren't raining now). It is equivalent to English 'if only' or 'I wish it were…'.

Toasting etiquette

When toasting at a Chinese banquet, the host typically offers a 祝词 (toast speech) ending with 干杯. Everyone clinks glasses and drinks. It is polite to hold your glass lower than an elder's. If you cannot drink alcohol, you can toast with tea (以茶代酒, yǐ chá dài jiǔ).

四字成语 — four-character blessings

Many Chinese blessings are four-character chengyu (成语, idioms): 万事如意, 心想事成, 一帆风顺, 马到成功. These are especially common during Chinese New Year and at celebrations. Knowing even a few of them is highly impressive to native speakers.
