Usage Notes
加油 literally means 'add oil' — it comes from the image of fuelling an engine. It is used to cheer someone on during effort, not just to wish them luck before. At sporting events, exams, or when someone is struggling, 加油 is the go-to encouragement.
恭喜发财 (wishing you prosperity) is specifically associated with Chinese Lunar New Year (春节). In some southern Chinese communities, the expected response is 红包拿来！(give me a red envelope!), which is said playfully.
Chinese blessings often come in sets of four characters. 万事如意, 心想事成, 一帆风顺, 马到成功 are all common examples. They appear on cards, banners, and in speech during celebrations. Knowing even two or three makes a powerful impression.
节日 (jiérì) means 'festival / holiday' as a general noun. Each specific festival uses 节: 中秋节 (Mid-Autumn Festival), 端午节 (Dragon Boat Festival), 春节 (Spring Festival = Chinese New Year). The greeting formula is [festival name] + 快乐.
