Usage Notes

The change particle 了

了 (le) at the end of a sentence signals that a new situation has come about. 他变了 (he has changed) implies the change is relevant now. 了 is not a past tense — it marks completion or changed state, which can be current or future.

越来越 — gradual progression

越来越 + adjective means something is continuously changing in that direction: 越来越好 (better and better), 越来越忙 (busier and busier). The adjective cannot be negated — use 越来越不好 for 'getting worse and worse'.

以前 vs 从前

以前 (yǐqián) is the everyday word for 'before / in the past'. 从前 (cóngqián) is more literary and often begins fairy tales or historical accounts. Use 以前 in conversation.

自从…以来 — perfect aspect

自从…以来 frames an ongoing change that started at a past point and continues now. It is equivalent to English 'ever since': 自从学了中文以来,我更喜欢中国文化。 (Ever since studying Chinese, I appreciate Chinese culture more.)
