Expressing Cause and Effect in Mandarin Chinese

Mandarin has a rich set of causal connectors. The 因为…所以 (because…therefore) pair is the workhorse of everyday speech. Conditional structures like 如果…就 (if…then) let you reason about hypotheticals, while 只要…就 and 除非…否则 add nuance for requirements and exceptions.

Giving Reasons (Because, Since)

yīnwèi……Because… (introduces a reason)
yīnwèi wǒ lèi le.Because I am tired.
由于……
yóuyú……Due to / Owing to… (more formal than 因为)
既然……
jìrán……Since / Given that… (the situation is already so)
wǒ shì yīnwèi zhège cái lái de.I came specifically because of this.
shì yīnwèi……de yuányīn.It is because of… (emphasising the reason)
wèishénme? — yīnwèi……Why? — Because…

Expressing Results (So, Therefore)

suǒyǐ……So / Therefore… (introduces a result)
因此……
yīncǐ……Therefore / As a result… (formal written style)
于是……
yúshì……And so / Thereupon… (narrative result; story-like)
结果……
jiéguǒ……As a result… / It turned out that…
zhèyàng de huà……If that is the case, then…
yīnwèi tā chídào, suǒyǐ wǒmen děng le hěn jiǔ.Because he was late, we waited a long time.
jiéguǒ tā méi lái.In the end, he didn't come.

Conditional (If…Then)

rúguǒ……de huà……If… (then)… (most common conditional)
rúguǒ nǐ lái, wǒ jiù hěn gāoxìng.If you come, I will be very happy.
要是……就……
yàoshi……jiù……If… then… (colloquial alternative to 如果)
只要……就……
zhǐyào……jiù……As long as… then… (conditional requirement)
除非……否则……
chúfēi……fǒuzé……Unless… otherwise… (negative condition)
万一……
wànyī……In case / What if… (low-probability scenario)
不管……都……
bùguǎn……dōu……Regardless of… still… (unconditional result)

Usage Notes

因为… Use both or just one

In English you say 'because' or 'so' but not both in one sentence. In Mandarin, you can use 因为… You can also drop one: 因为下雨,我没去。 Both are natural.

Written / formal register

由于 carries a more formal tone than 因为 and is common in written Chinese, news, and professional contexts. Avoid overusing it in casual conversation or it will sound stiff.

The paired conditional

The 就 in the result clause is often optional in speech but keeps the logic explicit and natural. (If you don't go, I'll go alone.) The 就 emphasises the logical consequence.

Low-probability scenarios

万一 (wànyī) specifically implies a small chance something might happen. (What if it rains?) It is more cautious and contingency-focused than 如果.
