Making Comparisons in Mandarin Chinese

Mandarin has a highly systematic way of making comparisons. The 比 (bǐ) structure handles "more than"; 没有 handles "not as … as"; 一样 handles "the same as". Once you have these three patterns, superlatives with 最 (zuì) and preference phrases with 更喜欢 round out your comparison toolkit.

Basic Comparisons (More / Less / Same)

汉字 Chinese拼音 PīnyīnEnglish
A比B大。
A bǐ B dà.A is bigger than B. (比 = compared to)
A没有B大。
A méiyǒu B dà.A is not as big as B.
A跟B一样大。
A gēn B yīyàng dà.A is the same size as B.
这个比那个贵一点。
zhège bǐ nàge guì yīdiǎn.This one is a little more expensive than that one.
他比我高多了。
tā bǐ wǒ gāo duō le.He is much taller than me.
今天没有昨天热。
jīntiān méiyǒu zuótiān rè.Today is not as hot as yesterday.
价格差不多。
jiàgé chà bù duō.The price is about the same.
两个都不错。
liǎng gè dōu búcuò.Both are quite good.

Superlatives

最后

Expressing Preference

wǒ gèng xǐhuān……I prefer… / I like … more.
我宁愿……
wǒ nìngyuàn……I would rather… (stronger preference)
我比较喜欢……
wǒ bǐjiào xǐhuān……I relatively prefer… (soft preference)
你喜欢哪个?
nǐ xǐhuān nǎge?Which one do you like?
哪个更好?
nǎge gèng hǎo?Which is better?
我两个都喜欢。
wǒ liǎng gè dōu xǐhuān.I like both.
都无所谓。
dōu wúsuǒwèi.Either is fine. / I don't mind which.

Usage Notes

The 比 structure

The formula is: A + 比 + B + adjective. You cannot use 很 with 比: say 他比我高 (he is taller than me), NOT 他比我很高. To add degree, use 一点 (a little) or 多了 (much more) after the adjective.

没有 for 'not as … as'

A + 没有 + B + adjective means 'A is not as [adjective] as B'. For example: 这个没有那个好 (this one is not as good as that one). It is more natural than using 不比.

最 — superlatives

最 (zuì) is placed directly before the adjective: 最好 (best), 最贵 (most expensive), 最重要 (most important). There is no separate superlative form — just add 最.

更 vs 比较 — degrees of preference

我更喜欢 (I prefer more) is a clear preference. 我比较喜欢 (I relatively prefer) is softer and hedges slightly. In polite contexts, 比较 is often the safer choice.
